Gameplay
Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition is a fighting game that follows the traditional 2D style of gameplay with 3D graphics. The game uses a four-button control scheme: one button for each limb (high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick). Players can also use directional inputs to perform special moves that use up a meter at the bottom of the screen. The meter has three segments: one segment allows players to perform enhanced versions of special moves that deal more damage or have additional effects; two segments allow players to perform Breakers that interrupt an opponent's combo; three segments allow players to perform X-Ray moves that deal massive damage and show a close-up view of bones breaking and organs rupturing.
The game also features a new mechanic called Fatalities. Fatalities are finishing moves that can be performed at the end of a match when an opponent's health bar is depleted. Fatalities are gruesome executions that involve ripping off heads, limbs, or organs, or using weapons or environmental objects to kill the opponent. Fatalities are performed by inputting a specific button combination within a certain distance from the opponent. Each character has two Fatalities, and some characters have additional Secret Fatalities that can be unlocked in the Krypt. The game also features Stage Fatalities that use the environment to kill the opponent, such as throwing them into a pit of spikes or a pool of acid.
The game has several modes to choose from, each offering a different experience and challenge. The Story Mode follows the events of the original Mortal Kombat trilogy, with some changes and twists. The player controls different characters in each chapter and fights against various opponents in scripted battles. The Story Mode also features cutscenes that advance the plot and show the interactions between the characters. The Story Mode is divided into 16 chapters, each lasting about 15 to 20 minutes.
The Arcade Ladder is a classic mode where the player chooses a character and fights against 10 opponents in a row, ending with a boss fight against Shao Kahn. The player can choose the difficulty level and the number of rounds per match. The Arcade Ladder also features endings for each character that show what happens to them after defeating Shao Kahn.
The Challenge Tower is a mode that consists of 300 challenges that test the player's skills and knowledge of the game. The challenges range from simple tasks such as performing a certain move or combo, to more complex ones such as fighting with handicaps or special conditions. Some challenges also feature mini-games such as Test Your Luck, Test Your Might, Test Your Sight, and Test Your Strike. The Challenge Tower rewards the player with Koins and unlocks new content in the Krypt.
The Tag Team mode is a mode where the player can team up with another character and switch between them during a match. The Tag Team mode can be played solo or with another player, either online or offline. The Tag Team mode also features Tag Combos and Tag Assists that allow the characters to work together and deal more damage.
The Versus mode is a mode where the player can fight against another player or the CPU, either online or offline. The Versus mode allows the player to customize the match settings such as time limit, round limit, health bars, damage scaling, etc. The Versus mode also features King of the Hill mode, where up to eight players can compete online in a lobby and spectate each other's matches.
The Online mode is a mode where the player can play online against other players from around the world. The Online mode features Ranked Match, where the player can compete for points and rank on leaderboards; Player Match, where the player can play casual matches without affecting their rank; Private Match, where the player can invite friends to play online; and Online Practice Mode, where the player can practice online with another player.
The Practice Mode is a mode where the player can practice their moves, combos, and strategies without any interference. The Practice Mode features various options such as dummy settings, display settings, recording settings, etc. The Practice Mode also features Fatality Training Mode, where the player can practice performing Fatalities on any character.
The Extras mode is a mode where the player can access additional content such as concept art, music tracks, videos, etc. The Extras mode also features Nekropolis mode, where the player can view detailed information about each character such as their bios, stats, endings, etc.
